This is the kind of movie that I want to read a plot synopsis of and an art book. It moves slow, which is fine but it's too steeped in its own philosophy to be enjoyable. I can tell that is was notable at the time and i'm glad for what it did for sci-fi, but I don't think it holds up. We wached the "correct" version, too.
