The Lies of Locke Lamora

I love heists, so it should come as no surprise that I absolutely adore this book. The cons are fun, the worldbuilding advanced, and the dialogue consistently colorful. I loved how the interludes provided background about characters while setting things up for the next scene. Some of the characters are a little underbaked, but it doesn't detract much.
The narrator really knocked it out of the park, too. There are a lot of accents and he made it easy to tell everyone apart.

Starts a little slow, but it really picks up as it continues. I especially like the worldbuilding and intrigue around the corporations running the game. It feels like there's a ton going on outside our POV which I'm optimistic we'll discover as time goes on. Carl doesn't come across as especially likable, but the cat and most of the rest of the cast are fun and I ultimately did really want to know what happens next.
May not be for you if you don't like reading RPG item descriptions at length. I like what they're going for, but item & stat discussion can go a little long / dry. There's some good humor in it all, but there's also some cruelty that doesn't feel reckoned with. We'll see if that smooths out in future books.
The audiobook narration is great, but the "new achievement" dialogue gets pretty grating (even when they're funny).

Like most romcoms, it starts stronger than it finishes. It's a funny concept, but they spend a lot of time on familial drama which is good for character building but a drag for the pacing. It's a cute concept overall though. It's a good read for the (romance-loving) birder in your life.

Project Hail Mary

Continues to be a fun read. The emotional bits hit a little harder than before. I especially liked the way the story was told through flashbacks. Hits a little different in the modern era, where you're not sure all of humanity could come together to save the species. I guess that's what makes it science fiction.

A great John Huges parody from someone who has clearly immersed themselves in it. Unfortunately, the actual story feels like it's silly for silly's sake and isn't compelling in and of itself. The audiobook was produced well, but I found myself bored of the way they wrote jokes and found a plot to tie them to (rather than the other way around).

Keeps increasing in scope and complexity. Keeps being an absolute blast to learn about this take on the universe.

Each book is better than the last! We've got a new alien race and increasing tensions within the Bobiverse. I'm super excited to see where it goes.

The series continues its outward expansion with more settings, characters, and plotlines. It’s done well, but remains hard to keep all the moving pieces in memory. Wraps a lot of threads up nicely though, so I’m excited to see where it goes next.

Expands on the first part well, expanding the universe and dealing with some of the consequences of their actions. Can be a little hard to follow with how many perspectives there are, but they're doing different enough things that it's not too bad. Also the audiobook narrator is top tier.

An in-depth look into the history of ZAZ and the production of Airplane!. The audio is good and there are a lot of voice cameos from producers, comedians, actors, and other people involved in the movie. It really was groundbreaking!

Another knockout mystery. The characters are great and the plot is a ride, top to bottom. Setting it all on a ship makes the puzzle that much more intricate. Bits of it get pretty dark, but it's a fun read nonetheless. Can't wait for his next book!

Great narration with all of the different characters. Lots of parallel plots made it a little hard to track, but it was still a great ride. Fun concept and very approachable hard sci-fi.

As You Wish
by Cary Elwes, Joe Layden 🔈
Very charming. Had lots of voice cameos by the cast and crew. Great behind the scenes stories and context on the making of the whole thing. Valuable too, since I lot of it was before I was born. I've always just known it as a beloved movie.

A cool look into Reggie's career and the business side of videogames. It was more of a business book that I expected, but there was some interesting context behind why some of the marketing and positioning of games happens the way that it does.

Touching and funny, but informative and pleasant. Definitely an interesting read.

Great listen! He tells some good stories. Interesting take on the evolution of a man. He's done a lot of neat things and had an interesting process in his acting. Told some good behind the scenes stuff.

Unsurprisingly pretty funny. Enjoyed his anecdotes and stories. He comes off as pretty human. Didn't talk much about ScarJo. It was a neat look into his life and comedy though.

Enjoyable! Good worldbuilding. Decent cast. Fairly funny writing.

There's definitely some smarminess, but the language is beautiful.

Pretty good. Collection if vignettes that get tied together with an overarching story. Fun, creepy in parts, but lacks some of the charm and wit of his other books.

A great performance and a surprisingly honest book lead to an enjoyable listening experience. This provided a really interesting juxtaposition with McHale's book that I listened to right before, too. Both good in their own way

I mostly enjoyed this. He's got a knack for storytelling and has certainly lead an interesting life. I didn't like how many lists there were. Frequently he'd talk about meals and name 7 things they had, mostly in French. I get that this helps emphasize his knowledge and the breadth of the food he eats, but after the second time they stopped adding to the story. That, and the cursing. In an effort to describe the culture of the kitchen staff, he went into great deal of detail about how their insult structure worked. This was super interesting, but again the list of multilingual curses he'd stream to drive his point home were more annoying than anything else. But, that stuff aside I really enjoyed most of it.

Enjoyable book! A mix of humor and memoir. The other thing I really liked about the audio book was that he had celebrity friends leave voicemails to introduce chapters, which was a nice touch. Also there were some audiobook specific jokes about not being able to see the pictures and stuff.
There was a lot of bravado on top of the stories, but there was also a very genuine person under there somewhere. Enjoyable read!

Definitely dragged in parts, but the quality of writing and story was there. A little silly how many different people Kvothe banged, but I guess that's what you do as a central character who has hit puberty. A worthy second outing!
